Something extraordinary happens 17-and-a-half minutes into the third episode of The Stones of Blood (1978). Until now, we’ve been inside a stone circle, at night, with the eccentric Professor Rumford (Beatrix Lehmann) and the robot dog K9, who’ve been guarding a device built by the Doctor (Tom Baker) in order to transport himself into hyperspace to rescue his companion (it’s a long story). The circle has come under attack from two living monoliths – the stones of the title – but now these ‘Ogri’ have retreated, to ‘recharge’ themselves…
