Spacesuit

The orange spacesuits worn by the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors are some of the series’ most distinctive costumes. Here’s how to make your own…

The orange spacesuits are a really versatile cosplay because they’re worn by several characters in Doctor Who.

I vividly remember watching The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit in 2006 and seeing the Tenth Doctor dressed in an orange spacesuit as he battled the Beast on the planet Krop Tor. In 2009 and 2010

I attended a lot of conventions dressed in a version of the Tenth Doctor’s brown suit. I loved the costume – and it’s still one of my favourites – but I soon felt I wanted to do something a little different. Browsing the internet for inspiration, I came across someone who had made their own Sanctuary Base 6 spacesuit and styled their hair to look like the Tenth Doctor. It looked incredible so I decided to recreate the image myself.

I went online and ordered two orange boiler suits – one to wear and one to cut up and make pockets out of. I also ordered a climbing harness, some webbing (the material you see on backpack straps) and plastic clips. It took several evenings’ work to finish the costume as I didn’t have a guide to follow. Through trial and error, I eventually worked out how big the pockets and straps needed to be. I didn’t have a sewing machine, nor did I have the patience to sew it all by hand. Consequently, much of the costume was held together with double-sided tape. I soon discovered that this isn’t the best way to do it!

I received a great reaction when I wore the costume to a convention for the first time. The majority of convention-goers hadn’t seen anyone do an SB6 spacesuit so it got lots of attention from other Doctor Who cosplayers. I even wore it when I met David Tennant in 2010 – he commented “Nice suit!”
