Plenty of people will tell you that the Target books were the principal way to relive old episodes of Doctor Who in the days before we had easy access to recordings.

Well, yes, but they were also objects of joy in themselves: beautifully packaged, bite-sized novels that gave us the chance to explore our favourite TV series in an entirely different medium. At their best, they conjured up vivid worlds that couldn’t be staged on a TV budget, presenting thoroughly realised characters who leapt off the page. Even the less-celebrated Target books – those that were rumoured to have been dashed off in the space of a weekend – offered clarity.
