Feature by JONATHAN MORRIS
The Doctor (Patrick Troughton), the Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney) and Jo (Katy Manning) are trapped in the TARDIS in The Three Doctors (1972-73).
The Three Doctors (1972-73) is a celebration. Broadcast to coincide with the series’ nine-years-onemonth- and-a-week anniversary, it’s the first story to be an exercise in what we now call ‘fan service’. It’s as joyous as a convention panel reunion; you can almost hear the whoops and applause as the Second Doctor materialises in the TARDIS and befuddles the wide-eyed Jo Grant. Because the great thing about The Three Doctors is that it is essentially a comedy.
