New Adventures

Current Doctor Who Adventures editor Jason Quinn talks us through the process of sourcing free gifts for the children’s magazine.
A Doctor Who Adventures reader marshals his army of figures.

In April 2015 Doctor Who Adventures was relaunched by Panini, starting again with a brand new issue 1. Panini asked a new editorial team to come up with fresh content, giving the magazine a different look and feel. But since its inception in 2006, one element of DWA has remained unchanged: the cover-mounted gifts.

“With magazines for younger readers, or where the prime audience is younger, I don’t think you’d find a magazine that doesn’t have a gift,” says Jason Quinn, the magazine’s current editor.

“Sometimes you’ll find that the gift really does have a positive effect. When we include sonic screwdrivers we find the circulation booms quite considerably. And then there’ve been other gifts where I’ve thought ‘This’ll be really good’ and it’s not done so great. You really don’t know what’s going to be popular.”

About Doctor Who Magazine

In 1964 Dalekmania led to the birth of Doctor Who licensing, and it’s been with us ever since. The return of the series in 2005 prompted an even bigger range of merchandise, which this time invaded supermarkets as well as toy shops. In 2017 the popularity, and ingenuity, of these products continues unabated. This is the surprising story of Doctor Who toys and games – told by the people who make, sell and collect them.
