Mawdryn Undead

TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH A STRANGE spacecraft trapped in a warp ellipse, the Doctor materialises the TARDIS inside the ship. Exploring with his companions, Tegan and Nyssa, he discovers that the apparently deserted vessel has been in perpetual orbit for 3,000 years, although a transmat terminal indicates that someone left the ship for Earth almost six years ago.

The transmat capsule returns, bringing with it a mysterious extraterrestrial schoolboy, Turlough, who has agreed to collaborate with the Black Guardian in order to escape from exile on Earth. A faulty transmat signal prevents the TARDIS from leaving the ship, so, to repair the transmitter, the Doctor transmats to Earth with Turlough, arriving in the grounds of Brendon School in England in 1983. Once the fault is fixed, Nyssa and Tegan follow in the TARDIS, but the warp ellipse causes a temporal deviation and they find themselves in 1977.

About Doctor Who Magazine

The Doctor has always challenged the linear conception of time. Since his television voyage began in 1963, the TARDIS has travelled backwards, forwards and even sideways through the mysterious Vortex. This lavish publication traces the development of these time-bending narratives, describing the rules that were laid down – and subsequently revised – by the series’ writers and producers. We unravel this timey-wimey journey with exclusive interviews, rare images and revealing features that explore the most intriguing corners of the Doctor Who universe.
