The Highlanders

THE TARDIS LANDS IN WOODLANDS, WHERE THE Doctor, Ben and Polly are almost flattened by a cannonball that crashes into the scene. Exploring the area, they’re taken prisoner by rebel Highlanders, who’ve sought shelter in a ruined cottage in their headlong flight from the slaughter on the battlefield at Culloden Moor.

Offering to tend to the Highlanders’ wounded Laird, the Doctor sends Polly and the Laird’s daughter Kirsty to fetch fresh water – but while the women are gone, Redcoats loyal to the King capture the cottage. The Doctor and Ben are only saved from a summary lynching when one Solicitor Grey, commissioner for the disposal of rebel prisoners, orders the convicts transported to gaol in Inverness.

The corrupt Grey, however, is in cahoots with a sea captain named Trask; they plan to sell the prisoners into slavery in the West Indies.

About Doctor Who Magazine

“History sometimes gives us a terrible shock, and that is because we don’t quite fully understand... We’re all too small to realise its final pattern.” Doctor Who’s first journey in 1963 took viewers back to the Stone Age. Since then the TARDIS has visited many other landmarks in a unique chronicle of the Doctor’s favourite planet. Purely historical stories were once a mainstay of the series, but for more than 50 years significant periods in Earth’s past have provided evocative settings for more fantastical adventures. This unprecedented guide takes a trip back in time with the people, places and classic episodes that are essential parts of Doctor Who history.
