THE GIRL IN THE FIREPLACE

THE DOCTOR AND ROSE TYLER TAKE MICKEY SMITH on his first journey in the TARDIS. He’s delighted to learn that they’ve landed aboard a spaceship, which the Doctor identifies as dating from the fifty-first century but which is drifting, listlessly, through the Dagmar Cluster, some two and a half galaxies distant from Earth. The travellers realise that the ship is deserted and that considerable, albeit incomplete, repair work is underway, even though the warp engines are at full capacity and a tang of roasting meat hangs in the air.

The mystery deepens further as the Doctor stumbles across a time window beyond an authentic eighteenth-century French mantelpiece, set into the ship’s bulkhead. It opens into the bedroom of the seven-year-old Reinette in 1727 Paris. A further time window opens into the girl’s life some weeks further along her timeline, and it becomes apparent that she’s being stalked by terrifying clockwork androids, which, although armed and threatening, are content to merely scan the girl’s brain.
