I.This gravestone, in the parish churchyard of Aldenham in Hertfordshire, tells the story of a mother and her three children who were accidentally drowned in 1880. What sources could you use to find out more about the tragedy?

II.Ada, Elizabeth Jane and William Richard Whitley were drowned in the incident; how could you find out the names of Edward and Mary Ann’s other children?

III.Many antiquarian publications from the 18th and 19th centuries include transcriptions of memorials. These typed details (see document on page 25) of the memorial to former Lord Mayor of London, Barlow Trecothick, in Addington church are taken from an 1883 publication, Croydon in the Past.
