What no one tells you about publishing your family history book

If you are writing a family history book that you hope will be read as widely as possible, you’ll need to acquire the skills to sell it. Luckily Belinda Griffin is here with a publishing bootcamp that will get you flexing those marketing muscles

Are you writing your family history? It’s not unusual to want to pull together all your research into a coherent story, to make sense of the lives of your ancestors, and it can be incredibly satisfying to see your family stories packaged neatly together in a published book. But there is an important question to ask yourself as you set out on your publishing journey. Who is your book for? If you are writing purely to put everything you have learned through your research into some sort of order and to share it in an easy-to-digest format with the wider family, then you largely have free reign. However, if you intend to sell copies to the general public then not only should you invest in professional editing services and cover design, you must also consider your marketing plan.

The truth about publishing

What no one will tell you before you publish is that selling books is hard work. It’s estimated that the average self-published print book sells around 250 copies over its lifetime. So it’s important to have realistic expectations of what you may be able to achieve before you start.
