WW1 tobacco tin that saved a life inspires book

Former British Army Officer and Tank Commander Andrew Wood has written a First World War novel, ‘Hanham’, based on an astonishing tale discovered from an item bought at auction

Andrew’s father Allan, a miltary historian and member of the Guild of Battle Field Guides, with an extract from Eric Hanham’s diary, close to the place it mentions

I came by the story in 2015 when my father, military historian, battlefield tour guide and former soldier himself, purchased at auction a tobacco tin that saved a young man’s life during the First World War, wedged into it the bullet sent to kill him. The lot however turned out to be much more than this rare piece of history and the truly inspiring story of the three Hanham brothers and their family was revealed.

After the death of their father in 1908 the Hanham family move to Kensington. Eva brings her three sons, Stuart, Eric and Basil and her daughters Kathleen and Stella from their sleepy village in Kent.
