Helen Tovey reviews a new book examining what it means to be human while Karen Clare takes a look at some incredible personal family history research stories and World War I reads

The Book of Humans: The Story of How We Became Us by Adam Rutherford

With the historical clues in our genes now becoming unlocked, thanks to the growing scientific discoveries and popular interest in our DNA, this book by science writer and broadcaster Adam Rutherford (author of A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived: The Stories in Our Genes, 2017) is an ideal read for a family history enthusiast who’s keen to learn more.

It goes way beyond the scope of the average DNA test that you may have taken, however, reaching back to six million years ago – and the point when two of a single Great Ape ancestor’s chromosomes spliced – which led in time to us (to this day, the Great Apes have 24 pairs of chromosomes, while Homo Sapiens – and Neanderthals – have, or had, just 23). Humans are one of a billion species, all sharing a common ancestry. This paradox that our biology is not unique and yet we are extraordinary lies at the heart of The Book of Humans.
