Solving the Jones Mystery With DNA

Emma Jolly’s Welsh roots left her with a sturdy brick wall in the form of her ancestor David Jones. But DNA research proved to be its breaking point…

Investigating sideways: AnnJones was livingwith her uncleDavid Jones, on the 1 911Census in StokeNewington. Ann was bornin London, butEmma foundthat her parentsHenry andElizabeth Joneshad been bornin CardiganshireWales

I A have been working as a Jprofessional genealogist since K 2006. Sadly, even professionals * struggle with brick walls in their family trees. No matter howmuch research I did, or how many records I checked. 1 was no nearer to establishing with certainty when and where my 2x great-grandfather David Jones was born. It did nor help that in 1856. Jones was the most common surname in Wales, and the 4th most common in England. Happily, earlier this year, everything changed when a DNA match enabled all my research to click into place. 1was finally able to establish Davids origins.

My 100-year-old grandfather Owen Jolly remembers attending his grandfather David Jones’s funeral in 1924.The funeral took place at a City of London chapel and was conducted in Welsh. The later details ol Davids life were not difficult to establish.
