The Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS) has warned that the County Archives Research Network (CARN) access card scheme – operated and subsidised by the Archives and Records Association (ARA) for many years and providing shared access to 68 local archives – faces closure due to new data protection laws and other issues.
Existing CARN cards will expire on 30 November – although some authorities may continue to recognise them – and the deadline for signing up to a new proposed scheme was due to pass on 31 May 2018.
