Diarist Gill Shaw charts the rollercoaster ride of researching her family history
‘I’VE GOT BACK TO THE 1600S!’
So, Nathan Walkden and Alice Whalley, 6x great-grandparents, married 1735 – fantastic. A speedy search online puts the year into context – King George II was on the throne, Robert Walpole was prime minister, and legislation was passed making witchcraft no longer a criminal offence – well, that’s something! William Hogarth had painted The Rake’s Progress just a couple of years before, and I can’t help but wonder if the poorer people in those paintings looked or dressed anything like my ancestors.
Enough of that, though; how much further can the records take us? Can I find Nathan and Alice’s baptisms? Will they lead to an earlier generation of Walkdens? Can we break the barrier into the 1600s? (No, I know that’s not what family history’s about, but a little bit of me would still like to…).
