The answers

We asked questions about records of death, in two categories, ‘Examining the evidence’ and ‘Tracking down the records’.

Examining the evidence…

I. We showed you a gravestone, from the parish churchyard of Aldenham in Hertfordshire, recording the deaths of a mother and her three children who were drowned in 1880 and asked what sources you could use to find out more about the tragedy?

The death Certificates of Mary Ann and the three children, together with the Aldenham parish burial register, should give us the basic facts. The original coroner’s reports may have survived, but by far the best source of information regarding an incident like this would be the local newspaper.

In this case, the Watford Observer covered the story extensively, describing the tragic events of the fatal day and including a full report of the inquest. The story was also picked up by other newspapers around the country and published as far afield as Cornwall, Manchester and Edinburgh.

II. Ada, Elizabeth Jane and William Richard Whitley were drowned in the incident; how could you find out the names of Edward and Mary Ann’s other children?
