The V4 engine configuration holds a very special place in motorcycling folklore. In racing it’s won championships in a variety of series in a number of guises by a handful of manufacturers. On the road? It’s special!


A V4 motor is compact, offers perfect primary balance (with a 90-degree angle) and develops its power in a very linear fashion. Why the whole industry hasn’t switched to the V4 motor is because it’s more expensive than making an inline four – it may be that there are the same number of holes as a conventional engine, but a V4 owns two tops ends. Ancillaries are tricky to house and working on them can be a bit of a bitch. So, as with anything in life, there’s a trade off to make.
