At weekends three of these guys compete in one of the most competitive domestic race series in the world, while the other flings himself down hills around the globe. So, what do racers do during winter in their spare time? Train, of course, the fun way…
Flyyyyying, over you…

It’s winter, there’s no racing, but no matter what series you ride in if racing is your thing, keeping sharp and fit as a fiddle is now mandatory. How do top racers do this exactly? To find out, we opted to join some of them for one of the most fun forms of training known to man – motocross (MX).

For anyone who has never ridden MX before it’s bloody hard work; from the confidence-building sideways riding style, to the completely bonkers jumps, the whole set up is guaranteed to put a massive smile on your face, along with a healthy side-order of mud and bunny crap. We were invited to tag along with British Superbike stars James Ellison and James Rispoli, Supersport ace Joe Francis and double mountain bike world champ Danny Hart, to see how hard these boys go in the off-season, and how hard they push us, well me!

Now, in my short time at Fast Bikes I’ve learned that the deep end is usually a good place to start for features, meaning my first proper attempt at hitting the dirt was alongside a group of seasoned veterans. I couldn’t even squeeze in a sneaky go on my own (so I didn’t look like a complete twit) beforehand, even though I have my own little Kawasaki KX125.I’dnever actually been to a proper motocross track, and had only been out on it off-road once – being a child in the eyes of insurers means getting a van is hard work – so I was more than a little nervous when I arrived and saw the size of the MX track and the air these boys were getting. Holy cow… Uh oh…
