Redevelopment of Plymouth Harbour, touted by the Environment Agency as “agreed” with fishermen, causes an outcry as the implications on working patterns for the Plymouth fleet become apparent. Ongoing worries in the Scottish pelagic sector, about the quota grab by several “Northern States” continues to marr what would otherwise be a late, but successful summer herring fishery. The NFFO AGM details a host of pressures on the industry, and real concerns about spatial squeeze, but the chairman Paul Gilson says, “industry still has a bright and viable future.” In the Western Isles, local fishermen unveil a new design of crawfish trap that they are commencing trials with. The centre spread features a full trip at sea on a SW beamer: fishing is good, but fuel prices are eating into crew wages.
