From the COBBLES to the BOARDS

THEATRE

He walked the cobbles as Marcus Dent in Coronation Street, strutted in stilettos for a UK tour of the Rocky Horror Show, and now Nicest Bloke in the World(TM) Charlie Condou is dusting off his acting chops and treading the boards for a touring production of Arthur Miller’s acclaimed The Crucible.

Charlie is taking up the mantle of Reverend Hale, a witch hunter who arrives in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1962 during the Salem witch trials, which saw 20 people executed after being accused of, well, witchcraft. It’s a partly fictionalised account, written by Miller in the 1950s as an allegory for the way US senator Joseph McCarthy exploited the fear of communism at the time.

Ironically, it was the godfather of communism Karl Marx who said that “history repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce”, but what this particular retelling of The Crucible is trying to highlight is that history is repeating once again – this time as the Donald Trump administration.

About Gay Times

Connor Franta commands attention. With 5.6 million YouTubers subscribed to his channel and over 350 million views, his video diaries offer a window into the life and mind of this 24 year old entrepreneur and New York Times best-selling author. Life is not always rainbows and butterflies, though. In our April issue, we sit down with Connor to discuss his battle with depression, how coming out wasn't a cure-all, and about our individual and collective roles in the fight for LGBT+ equality.  Elsewhere in the issue, the world-exclusive interview with all the queens from Season 9 of RuPaul's Drag Race; Nicholas Afoa becomes the first Disney theatre star to pose for a gay magazine; comedian Richard Gadd on using comedy to deal with sexual assault; Dan Matthews, SVP of PETA, on throwing pies at Anna Wintour; LDN Muscle's brothers on their game-changing approach to fitness; plus, style, travel and community features.
