We (still) gotta fight, fight, fight, fight, fight for this LOVE

FIFTY YEARS SINCE THE PARTIAL DECRIMINALISATION IN THE UK IS CERTAINLY CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION, BUT IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT WHILE WE’VE WON SIGNIFICANT FREEDOMS HERE AT HOME, LGBT+ PEOPLE GLOBALLY – EVEN IN OUR OWN SO-CALLED COMMONWEALTH – ARE STILL BATTLING AND RISKING THEIR LIVES ON A DAILY BASIS. WE SPEAK WITH ACTIVISTS FROM THE WORLD’S MOST HOMOPHOBIC COUNTRIES TO REMIND OURSELVES THAT THE FIGHT IS FAR FROM OVER.

This month marks 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of male homosexuality in the UK. We’re careful to say ‘partial decriminalisation’, because although the Sexual Offences Act 1967 repealed the penalty of life imprisonment for anal sex, the law still discriminated.

Gay sex remained prosecutable unless it took place behind closed doors with no one else in the house. Sex between more than two men was also illegal, or if two men were filmed, photographed or even watched having sex by another person. In 1998, the same year the Spice Girls released Stop, seven men in Bolton were convicted of group sex and two were handed suspended jail sentences. It wasn’t until 2013 – just a year before gay mustn’t forget that life is still extremely difficult for LGBT+ people globally. A 2017 report from the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association revealed that 72 States continue to criminalise same-sex activity. Although this number is slowly decreasing, persecution and stigmatisation persist in many places, with fewer than 25% of countries legally protecting LGBT+ people.
