HEPATITIS C AND ME

Back in 2010, big city lawyer Philip C Baldwin’s world was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with both HIV and hepatitis C. He felt isolated from his friends, colleagues and family, and even rejected from the gay community when people found out he was infected with both of the blood borne viruses. With the possibility that his lifespan could be reduced by decades, Philip threw himself into activism and advocating for those who are co-infected – which is about 9% of all people HIVpositive. Now, ahead of World Hepatitis Day on 28 July, after undergoing new treatment, Philip can proudly say for the first time in more than six years that he’s hepatitis C-free. This is his journey.

After experiencing bullying at school, I spent the latter part of my teens, and the early part of my 20s growing into this out and proud gay man. Since school, it was drummed into me that I should use condoms, so I really tried to be careful. I was someone who always tried to play safe, but that meant that I was only really playing safe around 90% of the time and I would attend my STI clinic once every six months.
