Analysis

The Stephen Port “serial killer” case has shown the dangers of gay dating apps, with details of his alleged crimes splashed across the front pages. And tragically, the alleged victims in the case, which comes to trial next year, aren’t the first gay men to be targeted. Attacks and blackmail attempts are more common than you might think.

Stephen Port, who lives in Barking, appeared at the Old Bailey last month accused of murdering four young men he met on Grindr. The 40-year-old chef, who was employed at a West Ham bus garage and who also claims to have worked as a special needs teacher at a Kings Cross catering college, is alleged to have invited the four victims back to his flat, given them fatal doses of GHB and had sex with them while they were unconscious. The bodies of the four men – Anthony Walgate, Gabriel Kovari, Daniel Whitworth and Jack Taylor – were subsequently found near Port’s flat.

The case is a shocking one and it’s a cautionary tale. Grindr has proven a huge success, allowing gay men to hook up socially and sexually, but – like Gaydar, Tinder, Scruff and other dating apps – it has its dangers. A couple of years ago, PinkNews writer Christopher Halton fired a warning salvo about dating sites, saying: “The most vulnerable individuals on these sites, the young, inexperienced men who really need positive sexual role-models, are being taught that in order to receive the attention and intimacy they crave, they must allow themselves to be used as sex objects.”
