How to be gay and Christian

Christmas is almost upon us, which means the same old festive tropes are inevitable – tacky markets, Die Hard on TV, and Lynx box sets from that one auntie who always gets your name wrong. But for the more spiritually-minded of us, Christmas means one thing above all else – the celebration of the birth of a carpenter’s son in Nazareth, Galilee, in 4BC. But being LGBT+ and Christian in the 21st century can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, far right Christian groups see living life as a homosexual as living a life of sin, which means we’re all destined to spend eternity burning in hell fire. We all know that Leviticus verse off by heart, right? A bakery in Northern Ireland owned by Evangelical Christians even used their anti-gay beliefs as justification not to bake a pro-gay cake, before they were eventually found guilty of discrimination. And then, on the other hand, the more militant of our colourful LGBT+ community dispute the ability to be both gay and Christian as a myth, leaving many saying it’s harder to come out as religious to their peers than it is to come out as gay. It’s why, with more than 2.2billion Christians getting set to celebrate big JC’s birthday, we took a deep dive into what life is really like for LGBT+ Christians, remembering always a verse from the Book of Matthew: Judge not, that ye be not judged.

CANON JEREMY PEMBERTON

became the first priest to disregard the Church of England’s ban on same-sex marriage when he married his partner in 2014. He was barred from working and took the church to an employment tribunal – which ruled that he had indeed been discriminated against, but that the church had every right to do so. He fought on and currently awaits the results of an appeal against this ruling, but one thing he’s clear to point out is that even when his own church has tried to test him, his faith and devotion to God has never been shaken.
