Cakes da Killa

Double entendre aside, Cakes da Killa is the latest in a long line of LGBT+ hip-hop and rap stars that we’ve been proud to champion. Here, off the back of his incendiary debut album Hedonism, the razor-sharp 26-year-old from New Jersey sets his sights on homophobia in hip-hop, history over hook-ups, and whether or not there’ll ever be a gay rap star as big as Beyoncé. Gentlemen, all rise (gettit?) for Cakes.

We call Cakes da Killa at the end of a lazy Sunday afternoon spent napping and trying to aspirin away last night’s gin. Within minutes, he’s blasted us out of this hungover fug with conversation that’s smart, straight-talking and sometimes provocative. “It’s because I have a big butt!” he says when we ask about that distinctive stage name. “But also, I wanted to call myself something sweet because I knew I wanted to beat straight people before they made a joke about me being gay. So I was like, ‘What’s the sweetest thing I could be? Oh, I could be cake!’ And then I added ‘Da Killa’ because I actually rap like a machine gun.”
