Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova… But your dad just calls her Katya. She’s the bright red scare with the long blonde hair who captured our hearts in season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race – and again in All Stars 2, before having the crown snatched away in the 11th hour by She Who Shall Not Be Named. But as we’ve come to expect from your average run-of-the-mill Russian bisexual transvestite hooker, she takes the next step on that runway we call life with grace, humility and a batshit crazy sensibility. As if there was ever any doubt, we’re with her…

The people’s princess

“Can I ask you a question?” Usually it’s us asking the questions, but as any RuPaul’s Drag Race aficionado will know, Katya has never been one to play by someone else’s rules. “Do you think that Princess Diana had Horcruxes for her soul, but like good ones?”

Christ knows where this is going, but we indulge…

“When Princess Diana died in that car crash,” she continues, “what if her soul smashed into a bunch of pieces and got into lots of people and things. I remember watching Saturday Night Live and it was interrupted with the news story of the car crash. At first I thought it was part of the show. I thought, ‘Oh, this isn’t very funny.’ But what if I got a tiny piece of her soul? But if it’s in me, it’d be a Whorecrux.”

Bear with us, this isn’t just a ploy to make a cheap Harry Potter pun. Katya’s Princess Diana analogy is actually an intelligent parallel between the former’s life in Drag Race and the latter’s life as a royal. Not least because Katya played Di in All Stars 2, which landed her unexpectedly in the bottom two that episode mainly because, as we point out to Katya, it’s pretty hard to make Princess Diana funny.
