Coronation Street star Rob Mallard is a new breed of young actor, a gay man who wants to be open about his sexuality right from the start of his career. And while there was once a time when that would’ve pigeonholed the characters he was offered, that’s no longer the case. In his first interview about being gay, Rob tells us the role he wants to play in helping to change attitudes…

“I don’t think the younger generation has enough gay role models,” begins Rob Mallard, as he considers who in the world of celebrity is out there for young LGBT+ people to look up to.

“Of course, there are still quite a few to choose from, but you should never put a cap on it and say, ‘We’ve got enough, thank you.’

“It’d be great if we could have more of a variety of role models too. We have the fabulous ones like RuPaul, who does her own thing, but then there’s the gay men who aren’t like that, don’t identify with anyone and feel quite marginalised. They need to see themselves represented on television too.
