LAYTON WILLIAMS Take him or leave him

It’s 20 years since Jonathan Larson’s much-celebrated queer musical RENT first tore a hole in the core of the Great White Way. And yet, in 2017, British audiences are still packing theatres to experience their own slice of bohemia. High-kicking and back-flipping his way as lead character Angel for this latest revival is Layton Williams, diva personified. But as his character gets caught between being in love and being HIV-positive, at a time when it was a death sentence, the young actor has had to go on his own journey of self-discovery to find his voice and defy the haters – paying tribute to Jonathan’s belief that there is No Day But Today…

Playing Angel in the 20th anniversary production of RENT isn’t something Layton Williams takes lightly.

“I’m very aware that it’s an iconic gay role,” he says of a character who is a fabulous cross-dresser, a fantastic boyfriend and a fearless friend to lean on and laugh with when times get tough – as they inevitably do in a musical that incorporates AIDS, drug dependency and artists struggling to make a living in New York’s East Village in the early 90s.
