fit for a KING

Every New Year is a new set of resolutions just waiting to be broken. We promise ourselves we’ll drink less, exercise more, eat better – and all the rest. But by the time February rolls around, we’ve thrown it all out the window and fallen back on bad habits. Enter our fitness and wellbeing guru Charlie King. Those of you who remember him from his stint on The Only Way Is Essex can see he’s gone through quite the transformation from his days on the telly. The man who adorns the cover of the very magazine you hold is now an advocate for health and wellbeing, a qualified personal trainer and a living breathing example of what you can do when you connect your mind, body and soul in order to achieve your fullest potential. Of course, we’re not trying to suggest every gay man needs to look like Charlie – everyone’s idea of health and fitness is different. But by following Charlie’s six point guide – which looks at keeping motivated, being confident and making gradual changes in every aspect of your life – we can all be well on our way to being the best version of ourselves possible.

1. Mr Motivator

I wanted to be totally happy in my own skin, but to achieve that I needed to start internally in my mind. I had to work on the issues that were in my head before I could start looking at how to feel good physically and being the best version of me that I could be.

All through my life I’ve tried to keep active and I’ve led a relatively fit lifestyle – I’ve never been overweight and I’ve never really overindulged on certain foods or anything that’s not good for you – but I never knew what it was like to work on overall fitness or be able to do more long distance exercise. Running my own business always kept me busy, moving, fit and healthy, and I have a good metabolism that kept me slim.

The first thing you have to do when you start looking at getting into shape is break it down. People get so overwhelmed with these images of what they think they might need to be and can probably never get to it. It’s better to wipe all that out of your mind and start by making small steps to a bigger picture. That might be from looking at your diet, looking at how much time you sit watching the TV each week, or thinking of some small changes you can bring into your day-to-day lifestyle that can make a positive impact.
