Queer punk duo PWR BTTM are rapidly becoming one of the most thrilling and politically important bands around. As they prepare for an even busier 2017, they walk us through their beginnings, their affinity with Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, and the best way to deal with anti-gay protesters waiting outside their live shows.

“I had wanted to start a band called PWR BTTM since I was 17,” says Liv Bruce, one half of the American queer punk duo with the best name on the music scene. Don’t be fooled by the lack of vowels, by the way. It makes the band easier to find on Google, but PWR BTTM is definitely pronounced “Power Bottom”.

Anyway, Bruce found the perfect partnerin- crime when they – we’re using this pronoun as Bruce has a non-binary gender identity – stumbled into Ben Hopkins’ dorm room one night at college, thinking mistakenly that there was a party going on. Bruce ended up leaving with one of Hopkins’ BDSM porn mags – don’t worry, they only wanted to collage with it – and the duo found themselves uniquely bound together.
