Stuart Milk

As the custodian of his uncle Harvey’s legacy, Stuart Milk feels there’s no underestimating the gay activist’s achievements. Having himself taken up the baton as activist and political speaker, Stuart says: “Uncle Harvey’s legacy is carried forward by all those young people across the globe that have those difficult kitchen table conversations with their parents and loved ones. His legacy is supported by all those that stand up for themselves and others in corporate board rooms when anyone is being diminished or marginalised for who they are, and all those that work to stand up for any minority community.”

The passion that was in Harvey Milk’s blood is clearly in his nephew’s too. Now 56, Stuart cofounded the Harvey Milk Foundation in honour of the slain politician, who was the first openly gay man to be elected into public office in California. A staunch fighter for civil rights, Harvey refused to compromise on his beliefs and became a hero to the gay community, but Stuart’s fondest memories are of the time they spent to together in their native New York before his uncle relocated to San Francisco.

About Gay Times

Our July cover star Tommy Dorfman is one of the rising stars to emerge from Netflix’s controversial new series 13 Reasons Why. The 25 year old revels in the controversy, noting that the show has instigated a conversation around mental health in young people that is sorely needed. Incredibly frank, and incredibly cute, we sit down with Tommy for an exclusive, no-holds-barred shoot and interview about his husband, struggles with addiction, gender fluidity and The Spice Girls (duh). Tommy’s unique tone and personality evince a positive response to hardship within the LGBT+ community, and his use of platform to promote love and equality demonstrate his rightful place in the limelight. This responsibility that our idols and icons alike have to enact change and project positive messages cannot be understated in a world increasingly burdened by a cacophony of hatred. Elsewhere in the issue: Paul O'Grady declares war on Russia; Debbie Harry on why she considers herself 'unisex'; Geri Horner on her George Michael tribute; Jonny Pierce on his sexual awakening; Miles Yekinni on why the muslim and gay communities should be standing shoulder to shoulder; plus style, travel, culture and much more!
