GERI ON GEORGE

Twelve years after her last single, Geri Horner is back with Angels in Chains, a song she wrote in honour of her late, great friend George Michael. In a Gay Times exclusive, the Spice Girl looks back at her friendship with the gay pop icon, one of her life’s defining relationships.

IMAGE CAROLINE TRUE

Geri Horner says she didn’t plan to write a song about George Michael; it just happened while she was working on her new album and processing his death – or rather, struggling to process it. “I was in the middle of writing, just playing around with lyrics, and I thought, ‘This should be about George.’”

Now, there’s no doubting who the finished song is about. It’s an elegant, heartfelt ballad called Angels in Chains whose lyrics feature references to some of the pop classics that made George Michael one of the artists of his generation: Faith, Father Figure, Freedom. Because Geri wants the song to feel “just very respectful”, she’s gathered key members of George’s “musical family” to sing and play on it, including his musical director Chris Cameron, longtime backing singer Shirley Lewis, and producer Chris Porter, who engineered his iconic Faith album.

About Gay Times

Our July cover star Tommy Dorfman is one of the rising stars to emerge from Netflix’s controversial new series 13 Reasons Why. The 25 year old revels in the controversy, noting that the show has instigated a conversation around mental health in young people that is sorely needed. Incredibly frank, and incredibly cute, we sit down with Tommy for an exclusive, no-holds-barred shoot and interview about his husband, struggles with addiction, gender fluidity and The Spice Girls (duh). Tommy’s unique tone and personality evince a positive response to hardship within the LGBT+ community, and his use of platform to promote love and equality demonstrate his rightful place in the limelight. This responsibility that our idols and icons alike have to enact change and project positive messages cannot be understated in a world increasingly burdened by a cacophony of hatred. Elsewhere in the issue: Paul O'Grady declares war on Russia; Debbie Harry on why she considers herself 'unisex'; Geri Horner on her George Michael tribute; Jonny Pierce on his sexual awakening; Miles Yekinni on why the muslim and gay communities should be standing shoulder to shoulder; plus style, travel, culture and much more!
