Phyll Opoku-Gyimah

What do we see when we look at Phyll

Opoku-Gyimah?

That she’s a woman, yes. But do we also see a lesbian? An activist? A trade unionist? Do we see a leader of a community? An inspiration to countless? Do we see a lover? Or a fighter?

Phyll is all of the above, of course. But we don’t see all that straight away. First and foremost – probably before we’ve even logged her femininity – we see the colour of her skin. We see that she’s black.

Before you go looking-up the speed at which our brains recognise colour, we put to you that this is down to social conditioning. Not just with race, but with everything. Whether it’s in our newspapers or our pop music, we’re subliminally trained to recognise people’s differences; man and woman, black and white, straight and gay.
