Victoria Wood

VICTORIA WOOD is one of the biggest names in British show business, a phenomenally -popular all-round entertainer. But, as a star-struck Megan Radclyffe discovered, she is also refreshingly ordinary

Victoria Wood TRIBUTE

FIRST PRINTED gaytimesjanuary 1995

I had arranged to meet Victoria Wood at the Heights Restaurant and Bar, fourteen floors above the streets around Broadcasting House. The view was absolutely magnificent. The sun was setting, glorious peach, amber and pink streaks against a grey sky

Victoria finished her interview with a fuzzy-haired woman in enormous glass who then backed away from the table, almost bowing as she headed for the lift. I ambled slowly across the floor like Igor, quavering "Pleased to meet you" and extending a hand that shook like a malfunctioning vibrator. She looked so small, swamped by ahi-back tartan arm-chair, but she was my hero.

Out of the 200 or so videos I own. Victoria's name appears on a fair number of spines. It's odd to meet someone whose routines you've repeated at the drop of a pint for the last ten years and find that she is so damn normal. Victoria Wood doesn't reel out line after line of wit-drenched humour, and she is tremendously unaffected by her fame. Still, my nerves were not quelled. I mean, Victoria Wood is big, Her one-woman show toured for six months and sold out for fifteen consecutive nights at the royal Albert Hall in 1994, something of a record, Now she has a video of the show to promote - and a book. The script of her frist feature-length TV flim. Pat and Margarel, the tale of two mis matches sisters, one a waitress, the other a soap star. who are disastrously re-united on a TV chat-show, has jusi been published. Bui, I gathered. Victoria had only acquiesced I0 four interviews. I wondered why she chose this esteemed hut comfy organ. Didn't she think it was still the kiss of dealh for a BBC light Entertainer to speak to a gay publication?
