As much as things change, unfortunately, they also stay the same.

2016 is a very different time for us than it was in 1994. From the repeal of Section 28 to the introduction of same-sex marriage, we’re as free and equal as we’ve ever been; and things only seem to be moving further forward.

But last year, we were all furiously disappointed to see that the Hollywood adaptation of the 1969 Stonewall riots – one of the most significant moments in the movement for gay liberation and equality – had been “white washed” to include a white, straight cisgendered male as the lead character, instead of focusing on the people of colour, butch lesbians, drag queens and trans women who, in reality, had been the real heroes of the time. And more than 21 years earlier, when writer, actor and director Rikki Beadle-Blair wrote the screenplay for Nigel Finch’s 1994 telling of the same story, things were no different.
