The Church’s apology

Last month saw Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, apologise to our community for years of hurt and pain from the Anglican church. But can we let bygones be bygones, or is it too little too late?
CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL, HOME OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

“I’m sorry.” To many, they’re words that mean a fresh start. To others, they’re simply never enough. But when used to apologise for the “hurt and pain” caused by a religious institute; do they take a whole different meaning than ever before?

The Anglican Church and us gays. We’ve never really got along, have we? Some live under the firm belief that sexuality plays little or no part in faith. Others are unable to join the two. But one things remains a constant: the Church’s approach to us as an entirety. We’re unnatural and wrong. But are these views simply as outdated as they seem?

No doubt you’ll have read the recent apology from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, following significant pressures from those within the church to open up their stance on same-sex marriage. And after a letter from the Accepting Evangelicals group, which campaigns for LGBT Christians’ rights, questions began to rise around the Church’s religious stance on homosexuality in 2016. Were opinion’s starting to change?
