BOYS WILL BE BOYS … but not always

Life’s anything but a drag when you star in La Cage aux Folles, the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical that brought queer life to the attention of theatre-goers for the very first time, way back in 1983. So as the iconic Cagelles return for their first ever UK tour, we put on a little more mascara to meet the show’s newest stars John Partridge and Adrian Zmed.

I never thought I’d actually be part of the show,” beams former EastEnders star John Partridge. He’s currently undertaking the monumental role of theatrical drag star Zaza – or Albin when he’s not in drag – in La Cage aux Folles.

As we discuss the surprising realisation that this is the first ever UK tour of the LGBT+ show, John keeps little hidden while revealing his love and admiration for this role. It is, as he points out repeatedly, the part of a lifetime.

“Albin is the Hamlet of musical theatre,” he excitedly giggles. “For an actor like me, that in itself is daunting enough and this material has given me a few sleepless nights. I will make him, my Zaza, my own. I’m different in my way from the Zaza’s you’ve seen before. I’m really different.”
