Olly Murs

He got in a bit of bother with us gays, ol’ Olly Murs, earlier this year when he suggested that he was “20% gay”. Some of the more militant corners of our community didn’t like the way he seemingly equated homosexuality to being camp. But this is a bloke who’s long been a friend of ours, with a history of playing Prides and proudly waving the rainbow flag. So is it time we forgave and forgot?

Olly Murs would like to apologise. Saying he’s “20% gay” was, he insists, just a joke and he didn’t mean to offend anyone by it. Olly’s announcement, or indeed jest, happened in May after Sacha Baron Cohen said ‘straight’ or ‘gay’ were “silly terms because it’s a scale and everyone is somewhere on the scale”, and then rated himself at 23% gay.

It seemed like a contradiction – saying sexual terminology was “silly”, then rating himself on a sliding scale anyway – but somehow the comedian and agent provacateur got away with it. But, cornered by a journalist, Olly landed himself in water that while not exactly hot was at least a little tepid.
