Fight for your rights!

On 11 May 2010, human rights lawyer and Kenyan LGB T+ activist Eric Gitari was outed by Citizen Weekly; listed by the paper as one of country’s ‘top homos’. As the director of the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, he’s fought the decriminalisation of LGB T+ people in Kenya, authored a report, and lead a legal aid program to combat blackmail, extortion and discrimination. Eric should be a national hero in Kenya, but instead he lives in a country that wants to end him. Fighting closed minds, illegal boundaries and the hate views of his nation, Eric tells us why he’s going to keep fighting for equality for everyone. Not as a privilege, but as a basic human right.

The law criminalises homosexuality. It’s ranked just like rebellion, theft, bestiality and paedophilia. That’s how it impacts on the views of society, and society can’t treat or even accept gays as equal to them. With high legal repercussions, it treats us like robbers or those that commit serious felonies.
