KINKY BOOTS!

From True Colours to Into The Nightlife, countless of our best evenings have been soundtracked by this music icon. With a career that spans more than 30 years, nine studio albums and a hit Broadway smash, Cyndi Lauper is finally helping London get kinky, bringing her acclaimed musical to the West End. Everybody say YEAH! Cyndi, welcome home

CYNDI LAUPER MUSIC AND LYRICS

“The phone rings, in the middle of the…” OK, we have to admit, we can’t think of Cyndi Lauper without any number of her iconic hits getting stuck in our heads. It’s a problem we face moments before our interview with the woman herself. But after a few pleasantries, and getting over the realisation we’re in the company of music royalty, talk quickly turns kinky. Kinky Boots, that is.

“We’re coming home,” Cyndi proudly proclaims as she begins to tell us of her imminent arrival in the UK. “The cast are wonderful and that’s the killer – the cast. They’re really great, and they’re English, so everything just feels so right.”

Based on the 2005 film, Kinky Boots follows the unlikely friendship of local drag queen Lola and factory owner Charlie Price. Following his father’s death, Charlie fights to keep his family business open while learning a few things about the true meaning of acceptance. Add a troupe of drag queens, or Angels as they’re better known here, and you’ve the recipe for a smash-hit show.

But with a music career and reputation to uphold, how did Kinky Boots strut into her life? With a little help from her friends, of course – Kinky Boots writer Harvey Fierstein and director Jerry Mitchell.

“Years ago now, Harvey asked if I’d write music for him,” Cyndi begins. “He asked if I’d consider being involved with a new show he was creating called Kinky Boots and from there, he sent me ideas for songs and we both instantly connected.

About Gay Times

Summer may be nearly over but fear not, the GT September issue is officially turning up the heat with English ruby star James Haskell. Bursting out of a glass box and straight onto the cover, James’s appearance in GT is timely given Keegan Hirst having recently come out at the first openly gay rugby league player. James has long been an advocate of the eradication of prejudice in sport and had this to say about Keegan’s decision to come out: “It took real strength and courage for Keegan to come out. He’s a tough guy, and the fact that his team mates, the fans and everybody has taken it so well shows that it can be done. And it shows that your sexuality really shouldn’t matter when it comes to playing sport.” Also in this issue: Keegan Hirst Kinky Boots John Grant Gay asylum seekers Cel Spellman Rebecca Root Natalie Imbruglia Kerry Ellis Jaymi Hensley And all the very best in style, tech, grooming and entertainment
