VANCOUVER BRITISH COLUMBIA CANADA

There’s a song by twee indie folksters The Elected with the lyrics, “British Columbia’s real nice this time of year”. It’s a lyric that’s going round and round our heads as our plane starts to descend over the proud Canadian mountains and into Vancouver airport. But after our five days in the Canadian province, we’re aghast at how much The Elected have been underselling BC to us all these years. It’s not just “real nice” – it’s jaw droppingly beautiful.

A sizeable chunk of British Columbia, as you might expect from Canada, is wilderness; with thick woodland and jagged peaks stretching as far as the eye can see. But nestled somewhere between the sprawling mountain ranges and surrounding sea is the city of Vancouver.

More than half of the population of British Columbia live in the Vancouver region, with Vancouver city known as being one of the densest, friendliest and most ethnically-diverse cities in Canada. And whether it’s the allure of the outdoor pursuits in the surrounding wildlife right on the city’s doorstep, the booming arts and culture scene, the varied nightlife or even the charming gay village, it should be no surprise to learn that Vancouver consistently appears within the top five mostliveable cities on the planet.

About Gay Times

Summer may be nearly over but fear not, the GT September issue is officially turning up the heat with English ruby star James Haskell. Bursting out of a glass box and straight onto the cover, James’s appearance in GT is timely given Keegan Hirst having recently come out at the first openly gay rugby league player. James has long been an advocate of the eradication of prejudice in sport and had this to say about Keegan’s decision to come out: “It took real strength and courage for Keegan to come out. He’s a tough guy, and the fact that his team mates, the fans and everybody has taken it so well shows that it can be done. And it shows that your sexuality really shouldn’t matter when it comes to playing sport.” Also in this issue: Keegan Hirst Kinky Boots John Grant Gay asylum seekers Cel Spellman Rebecca Root Natalie Imbruglia Kerry Ellis Jaymi Hensley And all the very best in style, tech, grooming and entertainment
