LGBT+ life at school

It comes as no surprise that young people are still being bullied because of their sexuality. In Stonewall’s 2014 Teachers’ Report, 86% of secondary school teachers surveyed said that their students had experienced homophobic bullying, while 89% have heard the term ‘gay’ being used as a pejorative among their pupils. From staying safe online to the lack of compulsory Sex and Relationship Education, we sit down at the Stonewall Education for All conference with presenter Gok Wan, author Juno Dawson, Muslim drag queen Asifa Lahore, mental health campaigner Jonny Benjamin, trans schoolboy Leo Waddell, Dr Rusama Mahim and Stonewall CEO Ruth Hunt to explore the problems LGBT+ kids are facing in the classroom – and what needs to be done to help them.

Most LGBT+ people don’t reminisce fondly about their experiences during their time at school. Most of the people we spoke to experienced or witnessed anti-LGBT+ bullying in some way throughout their education.

While not out at school, mental health campaigner Jonny Benjamin saw firsthand homophobic bullying directed at one of his classmates. He attended a Jewish secondary school where sex and relationships “weren’t talked about”, with homosexuality only ever mentioned in the context of it being “a sin”.
