There Ain’t Nothing Like a Dame

It’s a particularly hot day in London’s glittering (and slightly glistening) West End as we prepare to meet an international icon. Dame Edna Everage is touring one last time – with the UK leg of Eat, Hope, Pray enjoying a Christmas run at the London Palladium. And it’s on that famous stage that we’re listening to the lady herself talk about the show...

“It’s a bit of an emotional moment for me. I have not appeared on the stage in the West End of London for over 15 years, possums. So it is a wonderful opportunity for me to recycle a little bit of old material. And by an amazing coincidence there is a lovely woman here wearing a lovely bit of old material herself.

“No, this is a special, special show. I’m not a vain woman. I’m truthful. And this is the best show I have ever, ever done. And unfortunately it is not just me but the Australian government have insisted that Les Patterson, whom I had hoped might have passed away, far from it, opens the show. So you needn’t have to come at the beginning.
