Nearly two-thirds of adults in England are overweight, and one in four Brits is now obese. Moreover, one in ive children leaving primary school is overweight, which is a real worry. Children entering secondary school overweight are more likely to remain overweight as adults. If we continue the way we are going, more than half the population could be obese by 2050.
It can be easy to be lulled into a false sense of security. I have got so accustomed to seeing bigger people in my surgery that I am often surprised when I weigh and measure patients who I am concerned may be clinically overweight, only to ind they are not just overweight, but actually obese.
I am often told that it is easier to gain weight than it is to lose it. hat’s not actually true. What is true is that it is easier to consistently overeat by a few hundred calories a day than it is to restrict calories by the same amount.
