Too much or too little fibre in your diet can trigger symptoms – but the type also matters. Psyllium (ispaghula), one that helps all types of IBS by normalising poos, is available in supplement form from health food stores. It may also improve symptoms such as bloating and incomplete evacuation. Start with 1tsp a day – it forms a thick gel when mixed with cold water, so it’s best combined with porridge or soup. Have it with 150ml fluid and check in with your GP if you need to take it for over six months.
