THE HFG CHRISTMAS SURVIVAL GUIDE

Don’t let stress, anxiety, stomach upsets, hangovers or colds get in the way of your fun. My tips for a well stocked storecupboard and a few home remedies will set you up for your healthiest ever party season

MOST OF THE SEASON’S ANXIETIES are easily solved, such as worrying about when you’ll have time to get to the shops (see editor Melanie’s solutions, right) or running out of food (pretty irrational, considering supermarkets only close for one day) and stressing about under/overcooking the turkey (a meat thermometer is a cheap way round that). But certain snags can threaten the fun… Family members with colds, friends with hangovers and partners with indigestion – and that’s before we get to children feeling sick after eating too many sweets! Take a deep breath, read this guide and I promise you’ll be armed for all those minor Christmas crises.

TEA REMEDY: BLOATING

Through the ages, fennel has been considered a remedy for digestive complaints, including indigestion, wind and bloating. Crush 2tsp fennel seeds and put them in a teapot or cafetière with 3 fresh mint sprigs, rubbed, and a few lemon slices. Pour in a large mugful of freshly boiled water, then leave to infuse for 5 min. Strain or press, then sip your soothing brew.

SAVE TIME: GET YOUR FOOD WRAPPED UP

EDITOR MELANIE LOVES TO COOK, but admits there are occasions when she needs a helping hand in the kitchen (Christmas being top of the list). Here are her suggestions…

…for maintaining the balance It’s hard to stick to healthy eating in the run-up to Christmas when you’re time poor, but it’s a whole lot easier if you get your meals delivered for a few days. It’s an expensive option, but I prefer to cut back on nights out over the month to cover the cost.

Balance Box is the best I’ve tried, with options for 1,200 or 1,800 calories a day. You get a nutritious breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks, all ready to eat or heat. The dishes are right on trend, too, with birchers, light curries and filling salads. From £19.99, balancebox.com.
