WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME you gave your heart some TLC? If you’re young and healthy, it’s all too easy to ignore the risk of developing heart disease. But the life we lead now – the food we eat, exercise we take and lifestyle decisions we make – can predict our future heart health. If you’re older, or already have a heart condition or some of the risk factors, it’s all the more important to care for your heart.

We asked the experts at the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and Heart UK, as well as our own expert, GP Dawn Harper, for advice on preventing cardiovascular disease (an umbrella term for all diseases of the circulatory system). Here’s what they want you to know…


‘MANY PEOPLE DON’T REALISE cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills as many women as men,’ says Tracy Parker, heart health dietitian at the BHF. ‘We’re three times more likely to die of CVD than we are of breast cancer.’ Worryingly, women are less likely than men to call 999 if they’re having a heart attack.
