SOAKING UP THE RAYS is a sure way to feel upbeat, but the potential damage caused by over-exposure to the sun ranges from skin ageing to skin cancer. Recently, though, several new studies have popped up linking a healthy dose of sunshine with protection against obesity, heart attacks, strokes, asthma, multiple sclerosis and even how long we can expect to live. A study in the Journal of Internal Medicine of nearly 30,000 Swedish women found that 1.5 in 100 who were exposed to sunshine once a day died over a period of two decades, compared with three in 100 who said they didn’t sunbathe. So how do we weigh up the benefits versus the risks?
