AVOIDING GLUTEN means you can’t eat WHEAT, BARLEY or RYE. While oats don’t contain gluten, they can sometimes be contaminated with it during the milling process, so you always need to check they’re labelled gluten free. Plus a small number of people are sensitive to a protein in OATS called avenin, which is similar to gluten. For this reason, most newly diagnosed coeliacs are advised to avoid oats for at least six months to allow the gut to heal.
