Have you found going the extra mile at the gym doesn’t seem to show on the scales? When scientists at The City University of New York looked at the calorie expenditure of 332 adults for a week, they found those who were highly active didn’t burn any more calories than those who were just moderately active. The scientists say this is because our bodies adapt to higher levels of activity, so exercising more doesn’t mean burning more calories. Having said that, exercise is still vital for our health, with benefits including keeping our heart, lung, bones and minds healthy (and it can also help maintain a healthy weight). But researchers say this is a reminder that if we’re looking to actively lose weight, we need to rethink our food intake rather than just working out harder and for longer.
